Farmer: Hugh Broad
Address: Gifford Haddington, East Lothian, EH41 4JL

Located in East Lothian, Woodhead farm is a 538 acre arable farm, North of the Lammermuir Hills.  It is a family run farm where winter wheat, spring malting barley and oil seed rape is produced for a range of markets.

The Farm

Woodhead Farm is a typical East Lothian farm surrounded by well wooded, rolling lowland to the North of the Lammermuir Hills. It is a 538 acre all arable farm which is run as a family partnership. We have always seen conservation management as complementary to profitable arable farming following LEAF and Integrated Farm Management principles.

Crops for food

We grow winter wheat, spring malting barley and oil seed rape. Winter wheat is grown for biscuit quality flour, the distilling trade and for animal feed.

Conservation

We are a family farm and have always managed the farm with nature conservation in mind. We have a wealth of valuable habitats, including mixed woodland with shrubs, hedges, dykes and walls, herb-rich grassland, water courses, ponds and wetlands. These provide a rich habitat for wildlife including grey partridges and skylarks.

Conservation activities include a programme of tree and shrub planting., the construction of a conservation reservoir to be stocked with fish and the fencing off of species- rich banks and verges. We manage our set- aside to encourage the breeding of farmland birds and have established buffer strips next to all water courses. In addition, we have several beetle banks and conservation headlands on the farm that provide ground nesting for birds and beneficial insects.

About LEAF Demonstration Farms

LEAF Demonstration Farms are commercial farms, which show the beneficial practices of Integrated Farm Management (IFM) to a broad range of audiences, through organised visits. They communicate an understanding of IFM in order to encourage uptake by farmers, support from the industry and political awareness of sustainable food and farming.
